Civil partnerships approved by States

The States have passed an amendment to a new law which gives homosexual couples the same rights as heterosexual people.

The new regulations mean that gay couples can now get married in a church or other religious building if that establishment is happy to carry out the service.

The amendment to the draft civil partnership law was passed within minutes in the States.

The fact that gay couples can now get married in places of religious worship is a change to the original draft of the law.

The amendment was pushed for by Deputy Montfort Tadier and was passed 30 votes for and six against.

However, even though now there is no legal obstacle to getting married in church both the Catholic Church and the Church of England have already said they will not allow it.

A successful States day continued for Deputy Tadier when his proposal to form a working group to examine debt collectors was passed without question. The party will look at collectors current ways of working and look to bring in a code of conduct.

But on his third proposition, that the States should hold all meetings possible in public, Deputy Tadier did not get the backing of the house and was defeated.

The Chief Minister said this was well meaning but not practical.
